20 Benefits of Spruce Gum | Why Choose AmberGoo?

20 Benefits of Spruce Gum | Why Choose AmberGoo?

If someone had told me years ago that I sparked a movement of going back to America's original chew, I would have been in disbelief.

And yet, here we are. Our goal is to bring back the original chew of the 1800's. What I began in 2018 has grown into AmberGoo by joining forces with my sister Julia, and is beginning to trend, and now we see brands out there copying what we do.

Real spruce gum is simple, wild and unlike anything in the candy aisle. It begins firm and brittle. It may shatter during the first few chews. Then, with a little warmth and persistence, it pulls together into a surprisingly satisfying gum.

But why choose AmberGoo Spruce Gum instead of ordinary gum?

We went through our product information, customer feedback and the available research on chewing gum and oral health. We found 20 honest reasons worth sharing. Some are supported by research about the physical act of chewing sugar-free gum. Others are practical product qualities or experiences reported by AmberGoo customers.

That distinction matters: AmberGoo has not been clinically tested, and research on other chewing gums or laboratory spruce-resin extracts does not prove that our finished spruce gum will prevent or treat a health condition.

With that said, there is still plenty to love about this old-fashioned chew!

1. It has one declared ingredient

AmberGoo Spruce Gum is made from Canadian tree pitch—primarily black and red spruce pitch, with some traces of pine and tamarack pitch. We do not add sugar, sweeteners, artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. It's 100% Tree Pitch.

If you like knowing exactly what you are chewing, it is hard to get much simpler than that.

2. It contains no added sugar

AmberGoo Spruce Gum gives habitual gum chewers something to chew without bathing their teeth in added sugar. Sugar is a fermentable carbohydrate that oral bacteria can use to produce acids, which can contribute to enamel demineralization and tooth decay.

Health Canada permits qualifying chewing gum to use the claim “sugar-free” when it contains less than 0.5 grams of sugar per reference amount and serving. AmberGoo contains no added sugar.

3. It contains no artificial sweeteners

Many sugar-free gums replace sugar with high-intensity sweeteners or sugar alcohols. Those ingredients are approved for use in food, but not everyone wants them—or wants every chew to taste sweet.

AmberGoo Spruce Gum does not use ANY sweenener. That mean you're not consuming aspartame, sucralose, sorbitol, xylitol or any other sweetener. Its flavour comes from the resin itself: evergreen, earthy, woody and sometimes a little bitter.

4. Chewing stimulates saliva

This is the clearest health-related benefit we can responsibly discuss. The physical act of chewing increases salivary flow. The American Dental Association notes that even unsweetened, unflavoured gum base can stimulate substantially more saliva than the mouth produces at rest.

AmberGoo customers notice this too. One reviewer described the gum as making them “salivate like crazy.” That is a customer experience, not a clinical result—but it lines up with what is known about chewing in general.

5. More saliva helps dilute and clear acids

Saliva is one of the mouth’s natural defences. Increased salivary flow helps dilute acids and clear them from the mouth more quickly after eating or drinking.

Spruce gum is not a replacement for brushing, flossing or professional dental care. But chewing a sugar-free gum can be a useful addition to a normal oral-care routine.

6. Saliva supports the mouth’s natural remineralization process

This is amazing! Stimulated saliva carries calcium and phosphate ions. Those minerals participate in the natural repair of enamel after acid exposure—a process called remineralization.

This doesn't mean AmberGoo has been proven to rebuild teeth. The accurate statement is that chewing stimulates saliva, and saliva plays an established role in protecting and remineralizing enamel.

7. It may help your mouth feel cleaner after eating

Chewing and the resulting saliva can help move loose food particles and leave the mouth feeling refreshed. Customers frequently describe a clean-mouth sensation after chewing spruce gum, and I personally love chewing it after my morning cup of coffee as it really clear out all my coffee breath!

That feeling is not the same as clinically proven plaque removal, so keep your toothbrush and dental floss. Spruce gum complements good oral hygiene; it does not replace it.

8. It offers naturally fresh, forest-like flavour

There is no peppermint oil or artificial “forest” flavour hiding in AmberGoo. The fresh taste comes from real tree resin.

One customer described it as “herbal, piney, and a little bitter.” Another said the flavour and smell made the experience feel like chewing a piece of the tree. If you enjoy the scent of an evergreen forest, that is part of the appeal.

9. It contains no conventional synthetic gum base

AmberGoo sources its chew from natural tree resin, not from a manufactured gum-base blend that is plastic at it's foundation. That matters to people who are deliberately trying to simplify ingredient lists or avoid conventional synthetic gum-base materials.

Again, one ingredient: Tree pitch.

10. One piece can last a remarkably long time

Most customers chew one piece for 4-8 total hours plus, and many save and re-chew the same piece over days afterwards. One of our customers had 1 piece last him 11 days! However, individual pieces vary because this is a natural, handcrafted product.

That long chew helps explain the price. A 30-gram tin averages about 20 pieces and can provide roughly 80+ hours of chewing, based on our typical customer experience. Your results may vary.

11. You can save it and chew it again

When you are finished for the moment, place the gum back in its small bag or tin (or better yet, your ABC Gum Tin). It firms up as it cools and can be warmed and chewed again later. Continue until it becomes too tough, too brittle or too bitter for your liking.

It may sound strange the first time, but once it becomes part of your routine, it is wonderfully practical.

12. The firm texture gives you a substantial chew

Spruce gum is firmer than most commercial gum. For people who enjoy a strong, full-bodied chew, that resistance can be deeply satisfying.

Chewing does activate the muscles used for mastication, but we don't promise that spruce gum will reshape your face or “give you a jawline.” Anyone with jaw pain, temporomandibular-joint problems or difficulty chewing firm foods should avoid it or speak with a qualified health professional first.

13. It gives your mouth something to do without sweetness

Some people chew out of habit, boredom or because they simply enjoy the motion. Spruce gum meets that need without turning every chew into a sweet flavour experience.

Numerous of our customers have told us they use it as a substitute for other oral habits, such as snacking, smoking or chewing-tobacco dependence.

14. The experience encourages slower, more intentional chewing

Spruce gum does not behave like ordinary gum. The first bite shatters into pieces, which you massage together on one side of your mouth while they warm and reunite—usually within about 20 to 60 seconds.

There is a small learning curve, but many customers say it becomes a non-issue once they understand the process. It asks you to slow down and pay attention.

15. Every batch has its own natural character

Colour, flavour, bitterness, firmness and chew time can vary. Some batches are dark; others are golden. Some taste strongly of spruce; others are milder.

That variation is not a defect to hide. It is what happens when a product comes from trees rather than an industrial flavour formula. We personally test batches for the chewing experience, while leaving the natural character intact.

16. It connects you with an old chewing tradition

People chewed resinous tree materials long before modern packaged gum existed. The American Dental Association notes the historical use of spruce-tree gum by Indigenous peoples in North America, a practice later adopted by European settlers.

We want to speak about that history respectfully: AmberGoo did not invent spruce gum. We are one small Canadian business carrying a much older practice forward.

17. It is wild-harvested in Western Canada

Our pitch comes from the Canadian forest rather than a factory-made gum-base formula. That gives every tin a real sense of place: trees, seasons and the wild landscape around us.

For customers who care about buying Canadian and knowing where a product comes from, that traceable story matters.

18. It is carefully filtered, prepared and hand-cut

Raw pitch straight from a tree is not the same as a ready-to-chew piece. AmberGoo filters and prepares the resin, then hand-cuts and packages it all by hand in Alberta.

The result is still wonderfully wild, but much more convenient than heading into the bush and trying to judge a piece of pitch yourself.

19. It creates less persistent gum litter

Spruce gum begins as tree resin and contains no conventional synthetic gum base. When a finished piece is discarded responsibly, you are not leaving behind the same kind of persistent synthetic gum material found in many ordinary products.

20. It supports a small Canadian family business

AmberGoo was built in Alberta by two sisters who believed this nearly forgotten product deserved a place in modern life. Every batch is handled on a small scale, and every order supports a real Canadian business rather than a multinational gum brand.

That may not be a health benefit, but it is a great reason to choose AmberGoo!

What customers tell us

At the time this article was prepared, our 30-gram spruce gum had 458 published customer reviews, with 82% rated five stars. Reviewers commonly mention the natural ingredient, earthy flavour, strong saliva response and the unusual shatter-then-soften experience.

It is not for everyone—and we openly advertise that. Some reviewers find the flavour bland or bitter, dislike the initial fragments, or consider the price high. Spruce Gum is wild, firm and unsweetened. If you expect soft, sweet bubble gum, you will be dissapointed.

But if you want a simple, long-lasting chew that tastes like the Canadian forest, you may understand why so many customers come back for another tin.

Is spruce gum right for you?

Spruce gum may be a good fit if you:

  • enjoy firm chewing gum;

  • want a product with one declared ingredient;

  • prefer no added sugar or sweeteners;

  • like earthy, evergreen and slightly bitter flavours;

  • value Canadian sourcing and handcrafted products; or

  • want a very different alternative to conventional gum.

Spruce gum is a potential choking hazard and is not intended for children under eight. Do not chew it if you have braces, dentures, loose fillings, weak or few teeth, jaw problems, difficulty chewing firm foods, or allergies to trees or wood. Stop using it if you experience pain, nausea, headache or another adverse effect. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition.

The honest bottom line

Spruce gum does not need miracle claims to be interesting.

It stimulates saliva because it is chewed.

It contains no added sugar or sweeteners.

It gives you a firm, exceptionally long-lasting chew made from real Canadian tree pitch.

And it offers an experience that is raw, traditional and refreshingly different.

Sometimes simple really is enough.

Ready to try the wild chew? Chew AmberGoo Canadian Spruce Gum.

Thanks for sticking around ;-)
