1. YES! It’s tanned using animal brains
Traditional buckskin is made using a brain-tanning process where the animal’s brain is worked into the hide. Brains contain natural oils that soften and preserve the leather—no chemicals needed. It is said that every animal has enough brains to tan their own hide!
2. It’s one of the softest and most breathable leathers
Unlike stiff commercial leather, properly brain-tanned buckskin stays soft, quiet, and breathable—even when worn against the skin and after being wet. This makes it ideal for clothing, moccasins, and outdoor gear.
3. Smoke is what makes it permanent
The final smoking step isn’t just for scent—it chemically changes the fibers so the hide won’t stiffen after getting wet. Without smoking, brain-tanned leather can dry hard.
However, we still recommend keeping your Buckskin Tie dry to keep in premium condition and avoid potential stretching and/or curling.
